Jon Dawson: Lost Jimi Hendrix bluegrass album to be released

by Jon Dawson/Staff Writer

A bluegrass album recorded by Jimi Hendrix in 1964 is set to be released in November.

The album was recorded during Hendrix’s brief stint as a banjo player with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys.

Below is a list of the songs included on the album:

  1. Foxy Mountain Breakdown
  2. Hey Uncle Joe Pen
  3. Red Out House
  4. Purple Scallions
  5. Third Stone From The Pines
  6. I’m Working on an Overdose
  7. I’m High, I’m Lonesome
  8. Knee Deep In Weed
  9. Blue Pills From the Roadies

“Jimi’s antics angered Bill from time to time,” Hughes said. “Playing the banjo behind his head was one thing, but when he started playing it with his teeth, it was on. Bill was so mad he doused Jimi’s banjo in kerosene and lit it on fire. Three years later when The Who thwarted Jimi’s plan to steal their guitar smashing routine at the Monterey Pop Festival, Jimi remembered his flaming banjo, and the rest is history.”

“He was only in the band for two months,” said bluegrass historian Jon Hughes. ”Based on the name of the band, Jimi mistakenly thought ‘bluegrass’ was a new strand of marijuana. He tried to roll a few joints using Bill’s Prince Albert tobacco, but he was unable to kiss the sky – although he did get a hug from Jimmy Martin.”
